The IK returns…

September 19, 2016

Hi…..this is a blog called the Insufficient Kitchen!

Every attempt is made to post regularly. At least once weekly, if not twice. Unfortunately, recent events have made that impossible.

What’s the photo, you say? Why, it’s an oak floor. The very one that lurked, unbeknownst to everyone all these years, beneath a cheap, increasingly filthy white carpet. Until last Monday, when Juan, Diane and John’s contractor/repairman/general fixit person/sainted soul responsible for keeping the IK’s house standing, showed up at 9 a.m. sharp, assistant in tow, to install the laminate flooring and new carpeting ordered last summer. As the men got to work in John’s study, Diane barricaded herself in her study with the cat, preparing to explain to you good people why she wouldn’t be blogging for a few days.

“Diane? Could you come take a look at this?”

Juan and David had made preliminary cuts into the aforementioned filthy white carpet, installed by the bank who flipped the house over to our intrepid couple six long years ago. Now Juan sat back on his knees, looking up at Diane.

“I think you have a wood floor under here.”

See Diane freak out. See Diane call John at work. See John, who never freaks out, say “wow!” See Juan and Diane returning the laminate flooring and carpet to Home Depot. See Diane hastily reassembling the bedrooms. See Diane realize she has far too many books. See the internet mysteriously, capriciously refusing to work. See the problem narrowed down to the modem. See Diane pull her (rapidly graying) hair out. See a fortuitous phone call to somebody calling himself The Computer Maven solve the problem in minutes. See ants invade. See the exterminator come out. See the ants laugh. See Diane place multiple, increasingly crazed calls to said exterminator. See exterminator only able to come out during a lunch date planned with friends over a month ago. See Diane’s doctor’s office screw up her prescription renewals, keeping her waiting 90 minutes, until a highly competent tech comes to the rescue. See insurer do even worse with a couple of minor tests. If Diane hasn’t had a heart attack already (highly unlikely), her medical insurer may well give her one.

This is why Diane hasn’t posted on her blog. She quite missed doing so.

But today? Today Diane actually cooked. She photographed the food. She carefully noted amounts. A recipe–indeed, an entire post, is in the offing.

Your patience with this utter lunacy–all first world problems, she knows–is appreciated more than she can say.
