It’s been a while….
The truth is, I haven’t had the heart to write. Or cook. I realize people aren’t reading this blog for political content–likely you come here to escape that–but I can’t pretend to be untouched by recent events.
No matter how you feel about what’s happening in the United States, chances are good your grocery bill is about to soar. I’ve always taken that into consideration here and will continue to.
In terms of the direction this country is going, well, it’s uncharted territory. I find that territory pretty alarming, but, as I say, this is a food blog.
Those of you old enough to remember the golden era of FM radio might also recall the late disc jockey Dusty Street, who was on air for LA station KROQ for many years. Street famously signed off her shifts with the line: “fly low and avoid the radar.”
That seems like sound advice these days.
Fly low and avoid the radar, friends.
And we’ll keep cooking.

A final note: There’s a new food writing website called Scribehound. For a short time, readers can subscribe for 1 pound sterling monthly (sorry, my keyboard lacks a pound sterling key.) And no, I’ve no idea how much that in is dollars. Not much. For this pittance, you receive daily emails–or not, if you don’t want ’em–from food writers like Diana Henry, Olia Hercules, and Itamar Srulovich.
In addition to the famous types, lesser sorts may upload to the site. So, with grave doubts, I did. “Reading Jane Grigson in the ICU,” an essay describing my experience of John’s near death last year and the months afterward, when he could barely eat, is up on the site under “Community Articles.” There’s also a headshot of me, which was required. Sigh.
